CMYK Printing

CMYK is simply an acronym used to describe the four-color printing process used in digital heat transfers involving Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, and black, which is the Keyline color.

Digital heat transfer decorating is a form of product decorating that solely relies on combinations of heat, dwell time and pressure to apply a pre-printed graphic or image to part of an object. It is the perfect choice for contract decorators and manufacturers who are looking for a simple, cost effective, high quality and consistent product decoration. So, when did this technology begin to evolve?

Full Color Digital Printing vs. Spot Color Traditional Product Decoration

Full Color Digital Printing

Printed at 1200 dpi and 266 lines per inch, digital printing is a four color process (plus white) that is capable of hitting over 10,000,000 colors.

Manufacturers, product decorators, and ad specialty companies have a need for durable, aesthetically pleasing labels that can also be produced on affordable short runs. It seems like a lot to ask, but it really isn’t – at least not anymore. Today, full color digital printing is the name of the game, offering numerous benefits over traditional spot color product decoration.

What is Spot Color Product Decoration?

Spot color printing is done one color at a time and is primarily used in the screen printing process. While there is no limit to the number of colors that can be spot printed, the restrictions come from the process itself.

  1. Time: Because each color is printed individually, it takes quite a bit of time to print intricate, multi-colored images.
  2. Accuracy: The accuracy of spot color printing greatly diminishes with curved substrates, such as water bottles, where there can be shifting between the colors.
  3. Quality: With spot color product decoration, the quality of the final image can vary greatly from product to product.

What is Digital Printing?

Printed at 1200 dpi and 266 lines per inch, digital printing is a four color process (plus white) that is capable of hitting over 10,000,000 colors and fluid gradients to produce photo-quality images. These digital images are printed on the underside of a polyester film and coated with the proper adhesive for their destined substrate – metal, plastic, ceramics, etc. The film is then slit into various widths, wound on cardboard cores, and shipped to the customer. Now, the digital image, known as a digital heat transfer, is ready to be applied to your product using conventional hot stamp equipment – just heat and pressure.

“Being digital, an almost endless array of process colors can be built using the cmyk+w spectrum,” said Matt Regan, CDigital senior vice president.

It is no wonder why digital heat transfers have become one of the most popular methods for decorating plastics, glass, metal and many other substrates. Additional benefits of digital heat transfers include:

  1. Because the process is digital, set up is quick and easy.
  2. The process is dry, requiring no cure time.
  3. Variable data is easily incorporated from image to image.
  4. With digital transfers, short run production is not only possible, but affordable.
  5. Digital heat transfers are perfect for a number of different substrates, including plastic, glass, metal, ceramics, and much more.

How Digital Heat Transfers Work for the Product Decoration Industry

Digital Heat Transfers Product Decoration

CDigital is the leader in digital heat transfers! Our print technology is by far the most cost effective full color print solution in the industry.

The product decoration industry is riddled with options – screen printing, pad printing, hot stamping, and digital heat transfers. Each has its own unique benefits, but only one constantly outperforms the rest: Digital Heat Transfers.

How Digital Heat Transfers Work

The Design Phase

It all starts with the design, and if the name didn’t give it away, digital heat transfers are designed and printed digitally.

“There are none of the traditional set-up requirements or costs,” explains Matt Regan, senior vice president for CDigital, formerly trademarked as Grafixx.

You simply send your image to CDigital, where we verify the image will print correctly then send it to be printed on one of our high quality digital presses. It’s that simple. And because it is a digital process, variable data, such as barcodes, text, or numbers, can be incorporated into each individual transfer.

Moving to the Printers

Once the file is verified by the customer, the real fun can begin. The image is sent to a high speed digital printer, where a five-color dry toner image is printed on the underside of a polyester film. The underside of this film is then coated in an appropriate adhesive depending on the substrate or product. The film is then wound onto cores, and packaged for shipment.

Digital heat transfers are printed using a completely dry process, meaning they are ready for shipping immediately after printing.

Transfer Application

Once your shipment arrives, you are ready to immediately begin the application process. Digital transfers can be applied using a large selection of conventional hot stamp and heat transfer equipment. Perhaps best of all, digital heat transfers are  fully cured upon application, on any plastic, and most metal products, instantly ready for shipping after  decoration. With other decorating technologies, inks need to  be cured,,  solvents must be flamed off. This not only costs you time and money, it also adds to production turn times.

Digital Heat Transfers from CDigital

CDigital is the leader in digital heat transfers! Our print technology is by far the most cost effective full color print solution in the product decoration industry. Plus, because we are fully digital, we can turn the jobs as faster than screen or pad printers who offer limited color print capabilities for the decorated products that they offer.

If you are new to using transfers, don’t worry. We will help you get started and happily connect you with transfer machine manufacturers whose machines will work perfectly with our heat transfers and your products.

Why You Should Consider Digital Heat Transfers for Product Decoration

Thursday, March 12th, 2015

Digital Heat Transfers Product DecorationWhen it comes to product decoration, aesthetics is your No. 1 concern. According to researchers from the University of Miami and the California Institute of Technology, aesthetics – color, logo, and overall product or packaging design – influence where a shopper’s eyes land on a shelf and thus impact purchasing decisions.

“The big idea here is that perceptual processes happen in the brain in parallel with economic value computations and thus influence how economic decisions are made,” said Milica Mormann, a researcher at the California Institute of Technology.

Of course, aesthetics are just one part of the puzzle, at least in terms of product decoration. Durability, affordability, and ease of use are a few other factors manufacturers and ad specialty companies consider before choosing a product decoration platform. (more…)

What are Digital Heat Transfers?

Friday, December 12th, 2014

digital heat transferIf there’s one thing that we discuss a lot at Grafixx, it’s the digital heat transfer – but it’s for a good reason. We stand 100% behind the use of digital heat transfers because they far exceed all other printing methods. With up to ten million colors to choose from and a process that can be undertaken economically and quickly, it really is the best solution for printing on glass, plastic, and other materials. All of the benefits of digital heat transfers is a conversation for another day, though. Let’s delve a little deeper in and learn more about what a digital heat transfer is and how it works!

What Exactly is a Digital Heat Transfer?

Digital heat transfers are used for product decorating, which is important for almost every company and organization out there.  While there are many different ways to print on objects today, digital heat transfers are one of the newest, fastest, most economic ways to do so. The important question: how do they work?

  1. The first thing to know is that digital heat transfers use heat, time, and pressure to apply a logo or other image to objects such as shot glasses, plastic water bottles, and even clothing. It’s a dry process that requires minimal effort.
  2. Digital heat transfers are pre-printed graphics. You can use nearly any graphic in the world and know that you’re going to get perfect quality out of it because of how the four different colors digital heat transfers use. It allows for essentially any color in the visible spectrum to be printed.
  3. There is no messy ink or cure time required for digital heat transfers, meaning it’s very difficult to mess anything up. Your image will look exactly like it’s supposed to once it is on your product. A digital heat transfer only needs heat and pressure to properly transfer the digital image to your product.

Why Should I Choose Digital Heat Transfers?

A digital heat transfer can save you time, money, and frustration. You will get exactly what you ask for in an economical way. You aren’t going to pay extra just because you want to do a short run production and you’ll get your product back quickly since everything is done digitally.
