Much is made of the quest for affordable short run plastic decoration. For many, it is the Holy Grail of the product decoration industry. Lost in the shuffle, meanwhile, is the need for affordable large run plastic decoration. Where do you turn? Manufacturers, ad specialty companies, and product decorators have many options when it comes to plastic decoration: screen printing, pad printing, and hot stamping. Quick and Affordable Large Run Decoration
The application of digital heat transfers is a dry, one-step process that uses heat and pressure to apply a pre-printed digital image to a plastic part or product.
“There are none of the traditional set-up requirements or costs,” said Matt Regan, senior vice president for CDigital. “Screens, blankets, dies and print stations for each color aren’t needed, so turn times are measured in days (often one), rather than weeks.”
This quicker turnaround time couples with lower set-up costs means lower per item costs. Hello, affordability!
Full Color Results
The digital printing process is a four color process (cmyk+w).
“Being digital, an almost endless array of process colors can be built using the cmyk+w spectrum,” said Regan.
Every other color in the visible spectrum is created using these four colors: cyan, magenta, yellow, and black, plus white. The four colors are printed in layers of dots that combine to create the illusion of many more colors. The result: high-quality, full-color images. Digital heat transfers are printed at 1200 dpi and are capable of hitting over 10,000,000 colors with fluid gradients.
Large Runs and Variable Data
One of the biggest advantages of digital printing is the ability to affordably incorporate variable data – numbers, barcodes, etc. – into large runs. This allows plastic product decorators to offer a wide range of personalized products along with their regular custom decorated offerings.
Decorating Round and Cylindrical Products
Digital heat transfers offer the highest speeds in the marketplace. Set up is quick and easy, and these transfers can be applied to a number of different plastic products, including round or cylindrical ones.
“Digital transfers can be used in almost any application using conventionally printed transfers,” said Regan. “While there are many technologies available for decorating flat objects, transfers – including digital ones – are often the only solution for round, cylindrical or shaped products.”
